The Observer Anniversary

Thanks again to Karen Zautyk

for her write-up last year on Nutley Notables.

Read the story online here Meet Nutley's 'Notables'

Here's how it began:

By Karen Zautyk
Observer Correspondent
NUTLEY – The prolific Anthony Buccino (15 books and counting) has just published his latest work: “Nutley Notables,” profiling more than 150 “Men and Women Who Made a Memorable Impact on Our Hometown.”
Included, of course, is Annie Oakley, whom everyone in Nutley knows once lived here. (Yes, outlanders, she did!)
Almost everyone in Nutley knows that this was the hometown of Martha Kostyra, now Martha Stewart.
But do you know about Frances Goodrich? Or Uncle Fred? Or Grumpy the Clown?
You can meet them, along with political leaders, military heroes, businessmen, scientists, athletes, artists, writers, et al., in the pages of “Nutley Notables.” And you may be surprised at the wide array of talents who called this tree-shaded town home. Or as Buccino describes Nutley: the kind of place “Norman Rockwell only dreamed of illustrating.” ...

Makes a Great Gift for that Nutley Lore Lover

"... The packaging is professional. The cover design is attractive, though I wish there was more information as to the book’s content, as this book would have appeal for stores, museums, and the like in Nutley as well as throughout New Jersey, I would like to see some copy on the back cover that shows potential buyers what’s inside and why they would enjoy this book.
This would make a great gift book.
You have compiled a diverse collection of mini-biographies here; it certainly is interesting to see how many famous and noteworthy people were born or lived in your town. You have clearly done a lot of research in putting this book together; I would prefer to see more usage of authoritative books, newspapers, etc., and less reliance on web sites like Wikipedia.
Good job with grammar and proofreading, though I did catch occasional errors. The formatting and layout of the interior of the book is excellent. I appreciated the many photographs you included, though I wish a few of them could be reproduced a bit more clearly.
You have a good web site to market this and your other work; you might want to hire a designer to give it more visual appeal."

What Happens After A Book Signing

"Wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed your talk on your new book Nutley Notables. Afterwards my girlfriend and I went back to her 90-year-old mother's house in Nutley and read aloud excerpts from the book. So many fascinating profiles but my favorite was the psychic who helped the police find 50 missing children nationwide. I remember her but never knew she was from Nutley. After a delightful hour with her mom we took a tour through the downtown area and along the park. Thanks to you and your book for starting a conversation that led to such a wonderful evening."

Chat Up ‘Notables’ With Author at Nutley Expo

Meet author Anthony Buccino and chat about
at the fifth annual Nutley Expo of products
and services of local business

Even the most ardent Nutley historian will find new surprises in this collection.

Our Nutley Notables include Old West sharpshooter Annie Oakley who has a street here named in her honor; home-diva Martha Stewart who grew up on Elm Place and often writes of growing up in Nutley but has no street named for her; and others who may have to wait a while for street naming honors.

Featured individuals run the gamut from politicians to high school coaches and athletes; from notorious personalities to beloved entertainers to the fellow in the local shop to the artists and writers who toiled long ago and today. Their images and stories document the unique contributions they've made that shaped Nutley today. So, do find us at the Expo.

Bring your copy of Nutley Notables for an autograph or buy one on site.

4 P.M. TO 8 P.M. March 26, 2015
Buccino will sign and sell books at the expo

"The society was approached by a major publisher about the Legendary Locals of Nutley project and I volunteered to be the liaison between the group and the publisher," Buccino said.

"We compiled hundreds of photos from archives of the museum and the Nutley Public Library. The photos were scanned and submitted to the publisher who said the photo quality did not meet their standards," the author said.

"Well, by that time, I had put in a few months on the project and gathered research on so many fine people in town -- many I had never known but who had done amazing things -- that I decided to continue the project on  my own and publish it through Cherry Blossom Press," Buccino explained.

Nutley Notables author will talk Nutley with Old Guard Friday

NUTLEY N.J. -- Local author Anthony Buccino will speak about his latest book, Nutley Notables: The men and women who made a memorable impact on our home town, Nutley, New Jersey, to the Nutley Old Guard at 9 a.m. on Friday, January 23, at the Frank A. Cocchiola Parks and Recreation Building, 44 Park Avenue, Nutley, N.J.

Buccino will talk about the historical and current figures profiled in his new book and also solicit from the crowd suggestions for notable Nutley profiles to include in volume two of the local history collection.

The author says he will ask more questions than he answers on Friday because of the immense local history the members of the Old Guard hold and share among themselves is enormous.

Buccino is aware that many Old Guard members personally knew many of the past century's Nutley notables. In fact, at least two Old Guard members are already Nutley Notables and are profiled in his new book. You'll just have to stop by the meeting to learn who they are.

Founded in 1947, the Nutley Old Guard is open to men 55 or older who are either retired or semi-retired. The purpose is to provide fellowship and activities, which enrich one’s life. There are no military, religious or political connections. They meet every Friday at the Parks and Recreation Department.
